Why We Joined NVP & What Newark Means to Us

As the Newark Venture Partners Demo Day approaches, we wanted to tell you a bit about why we joined “NVP” and what the program has meant to us.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Newark Venture Partners, NVP is a venture capital fund with $50mm in AUM, which it deploys via direct investments, as well as an accelerator program, NVP Labs.

NVP was founded by Audible Founder Don Katz as a way to foster an entrepreneurial community in Newark, a city of its own on the outskirts of New York City. NVP’s partners and investors include Audible (an Amazon subsidiary), Dun & Bradstreet, the city of Newark, Prudential, Rutgers Business School, and many others, all contributing to the revitalization of Newark.

In November, Newark Venture Partners showed their confidence in the Bixby team and the business we’re creating by participating meaningfully in our latest pre-seed funding round. They led an impressive group of investors supporting the Company as we look to take a big step in 2018. With the help of NVP, Bixby will approach $1mm in total funding for the Company to date.

NVP is much more than just a check – they’ve partnered with high-profile investors, mentors, advisors, and community groups to provide expertise to each of its portfolio companies. We’ve been particularly fortunate to leverage their network to connect with customers and business partners throughout the tristate area, a key focus of expansion for us.

NVP portfolio companies have unparalleled access to Audible system engineers and architects, data scientists, technologists, and business experts, all located in the same building as NVP. Beyond Audible, NVP has an excellent team of in-house experts across sales, marketing, legal, and product design / development, all of whom have contributed to Bixby in numerous ways.

Newark, NJ – once home to one of the highest crime rates in the country – is in the early innings of an urban revitalization, a story Bixby looks forward to being a part of. $2 billion of new construction is underway in the city, with 3,000 housing units for workers, as well as new commercial space, hospitality, & street-level amenities increasing the number of service-economy jobs & contributing to further population growth locally. Newark also boasts 60+ academic institutions of higher learning – including Rutgers, Seton Hall, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (“NJIT”) – which provide a flow of 40,000+ potential employees to local businesses in need.

Office Space in innovation hub

NVP has built an impressive and collaborative 25K sq ft office space just minutes from public transportation to both Manhattan and the rest of the world via Amtrak @ Newark Penn Station and nearby Newark International Airport. Newark itself also sits on some of the highest sought-after dark fiber infrastructure with substantial bandwidth for internet and connectivity, providing some of the fastest internet in the country.
